THALER

Windows (WSL2) guide

Follower node · not yet tested on outside Windows hardware

This installs the non-validator follower (pilot r2, chain 7121905). It gives no voting power or rewards. Test TLR has no value.

1. Install WSL2 with Ubuntu 24.04

Windows 10 (2004+) or 11. In PowerShell as Administrator:

Run in: PowerShell (Administrator)

wsl --install -d Ubuntu-24.04

Restart if asked, open Ubuntu 24.04, create a user, then check it shows version 2:

Run in: PowerShell

wsl -l -v

2. Turn on systemd

This one step needs sudo because it edits a system file:

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

sudo nano /etc/wsl.conf

Add these lines (file contents, not a command), save and exit:

[boot]
systemd=true

Run in: PowerShell

wsl --shutdown

Reopen Ubuntu 24.04, then confirm systemd is running:

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

systemctl --user status

3. Check Python

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

python3 --version

Needs 3.11 or newer (Ubuntu 24.04 ships 3.12).

4. Download, verify and install

As your normal user. Do not use sudo for these steps; the installer runs without it.

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

curl -fLO https://github.com/VoltlyInc/thaler-testnet-releases/releases/download/thaler-testnet-7121905-pilot-r2/thaler-testnet-7121905-linux-amd64-pilot-r2.tar.gz
curl -fLO https://github.com/VoltlyInc/thaler-testnet-releases/releases/download/thaler-testnet-7121905-pilot-r2/thaler-testnet-7121905-linux-amd64-pilot-r2.tar.gz.sha256
sha256sum -c thaler-testnet-7121905-linux-amd64-pilot-r2.tar.gz.sha256

If it doesn't print OK, stop. Expected SHA-256: 8cb6c35242a2d48cdc9c417fc2025fbfabb3c6af40e43aa5e15a3f2a036a4a7a

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

tar -xzf thaler-testnet-7121905-linux-amd64-pilot-r2.tar.gz
cd thaler-testnet-7121905-linux-amd64
python3 install-node.py

5. Check status and sync

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

systemctl --user status thaler-testnet-7121905-node.service
curl http://127.0.0.1:29657/status

catching_up: false means synced. Check again a minute later: the height should rise.

6. Restart test

Run in: Ubuntu terminal

systemctl --user restart thaler-testnet-7121905-node.service

It should come back with the same node ID and keep syncing.

Limits

  • One directly connected node per public IP.
  • Never copy an installed node's keys or data folder to another PC.
  • WSL must stay running; Windows doesn't start the node at boot.
  • One validator today — if it's down, blocks pause.
